The name Baxter means 'bakester' or baker. The
first Baxters in Angus may have been bakers at the royal castle at Forfar in the
thirteenth centuary. William Baxter of Ellengowan (Dundee) and Balgavies
(Forfarshire) had several children, including Edward Baxter of Kincaldrum and Kilmaron
(1825-1890) who was made a Privy Councillor in 1873 and Sir David Baxter (1793-1872)
patron of Dundee. Baxters outside Angus are frequently regarded as a sept of
Macmillan.
