Numbers
The cardinal number are:
nocht nyne
ane/yin
ten
twa/twae eleivin
thrie twal
fower twantie
five thertie
sax a hunder
seivin a thousan
echt a million
Before nouns, ae (or yae is
used as an adjective instead of ane/yin.
Ae fond kiss an then we pairtit.
Yae day ye’l mynd
whit Ah said.
It wes naither the ae thing nor the ither.
This can take the form:
It wes naither tae thing nor tither
Or: It wes naither the tae thing nor the tither.
The number twa (or
twae) is sometimes linked to thrie, to indicate a small
indeterminate number:
Ah wes rael vext ti see the war nae mair nor twa-thrie
fowk at his funeral.
In numbers over twantie,
the unit is sometimes placed before the tens. For example:
ane an twantie, seivin an twantie,
The ordinal numbers are formed by adding –t to the cardinals, as in
Jamie the Saxt.
For example:
first echt
saicont nynt
third tent
fowert
eleivint
fift
twalt
saxt twantiet
seivint hundert
We wul nou sing the hunder an seivint psaum.
The terms, saicont lest, third lest, etc.
are used for English, last but one, etc. |
