James Dewar was born on
September 20, 1842 in Kincardine, Scotland. He got most of his education
at Edinburgh University. He also taught there and at the Royal Veterinary
College. He became Jacksonian professor at Cambridge in 1875 and Fullerian
professor at the Royal Institution in London in 1877. He held both posts
until his death in London, on March 27, 1923.
James and a British chemist
named Sir Frederick Abel, invented cordite, a smokeless gunpowder. Dewar
was knighted in 1904. His invention was the Dewar flask which is a bottle-
shaped container designed to keep its contents at a steady temperature.
