Here is another illusion gone: "A testimonial to
Quisling was exhibited in the Revolution Museum in Moscow, alongside
Churchill’s order to tighten the blockade of Russia, saying on behalf of
the Central Committee of the Communist Party; The people of the hungry
regions of the Ukraine will never forget that the first appeal for help
and the actual commencement of the work among us in Ukraine was begun by
Dr Fridjtof Nansen's representative, his friend and fellow-country-man,
Captain Quisling" (from Quisling; Prophet without Honour, by
Ralph Hewins, p. 57).
Nansen calculated that in this instance Quisling saved
200,000 people from death by starvation.
So please do not call our opponents
"quislings". They do not deserve it.
It is admitted that he was a Commander of the Most
Noble Order of the Defunct British Empire (CBE). But every man has his
moment of weakness.
The Chairman of Cathcart Branch recently reminded me
that in the unlamented days of the 1945 Labour Government I published an
article entitled "Was Quisling a Woodburn?" . I have just
discovered that Quisling was the right-hand man of Nansen, the Norwegian
Nationalist, and expended great energy and ability in feeding the starving
peoples of Europe in 1918-21. As I can find nothing comparable in the
career of that Northern Briton, the answer to that question is "NO!
" The Norwegians shot Quisling. What a pity! That is another
difference!
