Lord Cameron, who declared that there was legally no
such thing as "Scottish oil" has made no reply to Professor lain
MacGibbon’s refutation of that judgement. He was one of Dr. John
MacCormick’s supporters in the Scottish Convention and signed the
Covenant pledging himself to "do all in his power" to bring
about a Scottish Government.
The English accuse us of narrow nationalism because we
talk of Scottish oil. But when some other countries talk of the same oil
as "European", Mr Wilson declares "What we have we
hold". This is what Churchill once said of the now vanished Empire.
When there is talk of finding oil in the English Channel, the English talk
about English oil.
Similarly we speak of "The Royal Navy",
"The Royal Air Force", but "The National Debt".
In reply to the Gracious Speech of Mr Heath
(impersonated by the Queen), Mr Wilson proposed that the Government should
say to the E.E.C. in regard to the oil discovered in Scottish
waters: "What we have we hold." In other words: "What the Scots
have, the English hold."
