Duncan S. McIntosh,
president of D. S. McIntosh & Company i; one of the pioneer live stock
commission merchants in Calgary. He was born in Glengarry county,
Ontario, on the 13th of April, 1866, a son of Stephen and Catherine
(MacDonald) McIntosh, natives of Ontario. His grandparents on both the
paternal and the maternal side were born in Scotland. The father farmed
in Ontario throughout his life and was prominently known in that
connection. He was energetic and progressive and took an active part in
developing the community in which he resided. His death occurred in 1911
and Mrs. McIntosh died in 1879.
Duncan S. McIntosh
received his education in the public schools of the province of Ontario
and remained with his father on the home farm until he was twenty years
of age. In 1886 he came to Alberta, where his uncle was manager of the
Glengarry ranch and he worked for him for some seven years. Then in
association with a brother, he engaged in ranching until about 1911,
when he went to Banff and for one and one-half years was in charge of
the animals in the park, being employed by the government. Subsequently
he came to Calgary and embarked in the live stock commission business
and is one of the pioneer commission merchants in this city and
throughout the province of Alberta.
In December, 1896, was
celebrated the marriage of Mr. McIntosh to Miss Ruth Marion Dawson, a
(laughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dawson, natives of England. Mrs.
McIntosh was born in England and was brought to Canada by her parents
when five years of age. Subsequently the Dawsons located in Alberta,
where the father became a ranchman, following that line of work for the
remainder of his life. He was successful in that connection and won the
confidence and esteem of all with whom he came into contact. His death
occurred in 1910, but Mrs. Dawson passed away in 1909. To the union of
Mr. and Mrs. McIntosh the following children have been born: Edward D.
is a salesman for D. S. McIntosh & Company; Olive C. is the wife of J.
Van Norman; Evelyn May is living at home, and is a musician of ability,
having received her final diploma as a pianist in 1922; Margaret is
attending school; and Stephen died when he was but seven days old.
In his political views
Mr. McIntosh is a Liberal and he is a firm believer in the principles of
that party as factors in good government. lie keeps well informed on all
important questions and issues of the day and although he has never
sought nor desired political preferment, he is ever cognizant of the
duties and responsibilities as well as the privileges of good
citizenship and to that end is never too busy to lend his cooperation in
the furtherance of any movement for the benefit of the community. Mr.
McIntosh is a consistent communicant of the Catholic church. For the
past four years he has been president of the Calgary Live Stock Exchange
and he is a director of the Canadian Live Stock Exchange. He was
champion roper of the Northwest, having won the roping contest held at
Regina in 1896, and was captain of the round-up one season. He is very
fond of athletics and he was a member of the Canadian Hockey Club when
it was first organized. Fraternally Mr. McIntosh is identified with the
Knights of Columbus and he is conceded to be an exemplary member of that
organization. In every relation of life he has been successful and his
genial and pleasing personality has won for him many true and stanch
friends. He is one of the dominant factors in the business life of
Calgary and Alberta is indeed fortunate in having him for a citizen. |
