Listen to this
poem here read by Stanley Bruce
I could feel the heat of the
flame on my face,
As I watched the steel being cut,
History was being made in this place,
I could feel it in my gut.
I saw it, I felt it,
It took a hold of my heart,
It was only one piece of steel,
Just one of the million parts.
But, it was amazing,
It was something I’d never seen,
It was awesome, it was curtain-raising,
To a lad aged sixteen.
The beautiful curved shape,
Was a double-bottom floor,
I saw it created, and from the plate escape,
Like nothing I’d seen before.
I tried to imagine how it would fit,
Dreaming as I stared,
One for the port side, and one for starboard,
This one, was one of a fine-looking a pair.
The machine stopped, and the flame went out,
Yet, I could still feel the incredible radiating heat,
I could feel it coming from the cut, but distorted plate,
Like a hot fire, but with a heavenly warmth to secrete.
