William P Haymond son of Colonel John Haymond owned the Bull
Town Salt Works. He also owned and operated mill property. William P. married Elizabeth
Byrne daughter of Charles Byrne, borne June 24, 1800.
William died April 24, 1869. Betsy died May 20, 1875 at
Independence West VA. Betsy willed the farm at Falls Mills, Braxton County to Clinton
Johnston.
The descendants of John Haymond and William Wilson were
instrumental in the settling of West Virginia. John Haymond the immigrant was born in
England and died in Rockville, Montgomery Co, MD, in 1750. His will states he was brought
to America because of the demand for his skill as an expert house joiner. He came from
England some time prior to 1734 to supervise the building of a fine house for a planter in
MD.
John was married to Margaret Calder on 8/22/1723. John and
Margaret's son, William born 1740 and died 1821. William Haymond enlisted in Feb. 1759 in
the VA regiment commanded by George Washington that had been detailed to garrison the
country captured from the French in Queen Anne's War. Family traditions says that he
accompanied the army of Gen Ed. Braddock on it march to capture Fort Duquesne, PA from the
French.
William married Cassandra Cleland, their son, John Haymond
was born 12/7/1765 and died near Bulltown 9/5/1838. He married Mary Bird Wilson on
7/3/1787, John and Mary Bird<>and lived at Braxton County. John built a mill there
and established a saltworks.
Mary Bird Wilson born 7/9/1771 died, 12/28/1837 in Braxton
County was the daughter of Col. Benjamin Wilson and Ann Ruddell.
The Wilson family was of Scot origin, According to family
tradition, David Wilson born 1685 in Scotland, son of David Davis Wilson and grandson of
Dan'd Wilson, supported the Stuart family in their effort to overthrow the Hanoverian
monarch of England in 1715. After the defeat of the Stuarts at the battle of Preston in
1715. David fled to Ulster Ireland where he died. His son William born 11/16/1722 in
Ulster married Elizabeth Blackburn, daughter of Archibald Blackburn in 1746 in Frederick
Co VA. William died 9/2/1801 near Hardy Co. WV. Elizabeth born 1725 in Ireland died
9/2/1806. William and Elizabeth are buried on the Whitman farm near Wardensville.
William and Elizabeth's son, Benjamin was born 11/30/1747 in
Frederick Co. VA and died 12/2/1827 near Clarksburg, Harrison Co. VA.
Benjamin has been described as the premier Indian fighter
west of the Alleghenies. Chronicles of Border Warfare has a number of references of
Benjamin raising a company to track Indians who had attacked frontier settlements. He was
a close friend of George Washington and Captain Isaac Ruddle. He also served as a delegate
to the Virginia Constitution Congress in Richmond in 1788.
Somehow between his military excursions, Benjamin found the
time to father twelve children by Ann Ruddell, daughter of Stephen and Mary Bird Ruddell,
whom he married in 1770. After her death, he married Phoebe Davisson in 1795. They had
eighteen children.
Benjamin's family bible has been presented to the Clarksburg
Public Library. The pages are faded but the family records are still legible and record
the extensive progeny of this most remarkable frontier pioneer statesman
