D. W. ROBINSON, M. D., a well- known physician and surgeon of Pierre,
South Dakota, was born in Lawrence county, Pennsylvania, October 26, 1855, a son of William M. and Adaline {Stuart) Robinson, natives of
Pennsylvania and Scotland, respectively, and members of the Scotch Presbyterian church. Both died in Pennsylvania, where the father
engaged in farming throughout life. The paternal grandparents, John and Martha (Law) Robinson, natives of Scotland, came to the United States
in 1812, and two years later located in Newcastle, Pennsylvania, where the former engaged in farming until his death. The Stuart family has
been quite prominent, some of its members being well-known authors and civil engineers.
For a time Dr. Robinson was a student in the One Study College at
Newcastle, Pennsylvania, and in 1874 entered Allegheny College, at Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he remained four years, and then
commenced reading medicine under Dr. E. H. Dewey, of that place. In the winter of 1879-80, he attended lectures at the medical department of
Wooster University, Cleveland, Ohio, and in 1882 entered the Kentucky School of Medicine at Louisville, where he was graduated the same year.
In the fall of 1882, he began practice in Pierre, South Dakota, where he has since remained engaged in general practice, but giving special
attention to surgery. He took a post graduate course at the Post-Graduate Medical College, of Chicago, in 1894, and is now resident
physician and surgeon for the Northwestern Railroad Company at Pierre, and in October, 1897, was appointed physician at the Indian school in
the same place.
In 1886, Dr. Robinson married Miss Kate M. Blackburn, a daughter of Dr.
Blackburn, who is represented elsewhere in this volume. She died May 9, 1892, leaving two children: Kathryn M. and De Lorme Blackburn.
The Doctor is a member of the American Climalogical Association, the
National Association of Railway Surgeons, and the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons and the National Public Health Association.
He has been president of the state board of health two terms, and was a member of the school board and council for several years. As a
Republican, he takes an active part in political affairs, and is a prominent member of the Masonic lodge, in which he has filled all the
chairs. Doctor Robinson is a contributor to the leading medical journals of the country and is also author of several interesting
articles on historical subjects. |
