When founded, how constituted, or what their function, I have no means of
knowing. I had no idea of the existence of any such firm till perusing
some of the papers in connection with the Ritchie v. Pollok, Gilmour & Co.
trial. Mention is therein made of co-partnerships 'at Hamilton under the
firm of John Young & Co., and one or more subordinate concerns.' These
firms must in some way have been auxiliaries of William Ritchie & Co. and
Allan Gilmour & Co.
