1770 - 1855, Army Captain and
Knight of the Realm. Eldest son of Adam Ferguson philosopher and
historian. Lifelong friend to Sir Walter Scott, from the days at The
Royal High School, Edinburgh University until Scott’s death in
1832. He brought Scott to his fathers house at the time of the
famous meeting with Robert Burns in 1786. He joined the Royal
Edinburgh Volunteers in 1797 and later joined the Army in 1805. He
saw action in many battles during the Peninsular War (1807-1814) in
defence of Portugal, before being taken prisoner. Appointed "Deputy
Keeper of the Scottish Regalia" in 1818, and was Knighted during the
King’s historic visit to Scotland in 1822. He is depicted in
paintings and Calotype prints held by The National Galleries of
Scotland. He is buried in the now sealed South-west section of
Greyfriars Kirkyard.
