Significant Scots
Thomas Dykes

Thomas Dykes (1850, Dundonald, Ayrshire - 1916, London, England)
Journalist and Author

Thomas Dykes, who was born and raised in Ayrshire, trained as a Law Clerk in Glasgow before becoming a journalist in both Argyllshire, and London. There in England, in addition to his daily reporting, he wrote and published in 1886 an interesting and imaginatively illustrated book called, 'All Round Sport With Fish, Fur, And Feather' - Adventures on the Turf and the Road, in the Hunting and Cricket Fields, Yachting Courses, Links, and Curling Ponds. The contexts chosen are mainly Scottish, but other parts of the United Kingdom also feature.

In the following illustrated genealogical report of his life and forebears, it is seen that for about the first eighteen years of his life he was 'a lad of the soil' on his father Robert and his mother Lilias' 300-400 acre farm, Laigh Hillhouse, in Dundonald. Thomas was fourth youngest of five boys, George, John, Robert, (himself) and James. He also had a younger sister Elizabeth.

Tracing back the Dykes' lineage from Thomas, registration documents show that his father, Robert born in Galston, Ayrshire in 1809, also had had four brothers and one sister, Thomas, Ann, John, James and George, with parents George Dykes and Anne (Woodburn) Dykes.

Concentrating on Thomas, born in 1850, the following images illustrate his linear family data from 1805 up to his death in 1916.
