SYME, a
contraction of Simon. In Scotland the name is more frequently spelled
Sim and Sime. An eminent surgeon of this name, James Syme, born in
Fifeshire in 1799, was in 1833 appointed professor of clinical surgery
in the university of Edinburgh, where he had been educated. He is the
author of a ‘Treatise on the Excision of Diseased Joints,’ 1831;
‘Contributions to Pathology,’ ‘The Practice of Surgery,’ and other
medical works, and was chosen chairman of the Committee for the
Examination of Surgical Instruments of the International Exhibition at
London in 1862. |
