SUTTIE, the name of a Haddingtonshire family, possessing a baronetcy of Nova Scotia, conferred 15th May 1702, on George Suttie of Addiston. By his marriage with Miss Semple, heiress of Balgonie, East Lothian, the family acquired that estate. His son, Sir George Suttie of Balgonie, the youngest but only surviving of five sons, became the second baronet. This gentleman’s eldest son, Sir George, third baronet, a lieutenant-colonel in the army, and M.P. for Haddingtonshire, married Agnes, second daughter of William Grant, Esq. of Prestongrange, a lord of session, under the title of Lord Prestongrange, and with five daughters, had three sons. Sir James, the eldest son, born 10th May 1795, succeeded his father as fourth baronet, 26th November 1783. He was member in three parliaments for the county of Haddington, and in 1818, succeeded his aunt, Janet Grant, countess of Hyndford, as heir of line, in the estate of Prestongrange. In consequence he assumed the additional surname and arms of Grant. He died in 1836. By his wife, Katherine Isabella, second daughter of J. Hamilton, Esq. of Bangour, he had, with two daughters, one son, Sir George Grant Suttie, fifth baronet, born 1st August, 1797, married Lady Harriet Wemyss, seventh daughter of the seventh earl of Wemyss, with issue, four sons and two daughters.
