Bishop Macdonell used
constantly to declare that every gentleman of his name should be either
a priest or a soldier.
I have compiled a list of
the officers of the name who have served in Canada in the regular
service and militia during critical periods, from official sources and
family records. It shows that the men of Glengarry's clan, perhaps the
most pronounced of all the Jacobites, have done their share to implant
and to uphold British Institutions in this part of the British
Dominions, and that—to use the expression of the Prince Regent—they were
to be trusted in the hour of need!
