Scottish Castles and Fortified Tower Houses Then & Now
By Phillip Plevey

Scottish Castles and Fortified Tower Houses Then & Now
by Phillip Plevey

Scotland has over 4,000 known castle sites - some just piles of fallen stonework, others magnificent fortifications. Castles are a fascination for some, adventure playgrounds for others, the might of a waring past. But whatever these castles mean to you they will always be loved.

From the 17th century, artists and engravers have travelled all over Scotland recording these castles and towers. In my small way I have tried to do the same with modern day photography to show what remains now. Some castles have been restored back to their former glory by enthusiasts who have made the castle their home. Sadly, others have been neglected and have crumbled into unrecognisable piles of rubble.

From my collection of engravings, I have selected 50 castles and tower houses to show how time has reshaped them. I urge you to visit them as some may soon be just rubble - lost forever!

Discover 50 iconic Scottish castles and fortified tower houses through time. This unique collection pairs 18th and 19th-century steel engravings with present-day photographs, capturing each structure as it was and as it stands today — often from the same angle for a striking comparison. Alongside these images, you’ll find a brief history of each site and precise location details, offering a glimpse into Scotland’s storied past and the architectural marvels that endure.
