Poems for Velma
Poem 1

The children looked out from the window
To see Velma walking through the snow.
Their mother had advised them to watch and stand
Where she could see them while she and Dad tended the land.

Her boots were tall and tucked into them
Were blue jeans making her legs slim.
Those were the days of 1940 when a lady
Didn’t wear pants, to do so might make her shady.

Shorty stood patiently, while she checked saddle and cinch.
All had to be secure  should she get in a pinch.
The sky was wide over her head, a backdrop
For the calves who were waiting in a new crop.
