Here are some of our old Guest Book entries.

A video showing the Chilocco campus, September 2003, is available for a contribution. The address to send your request and whatever you are able to send monetarily is:

The winds of change are in the air and there is talk of a museum at Chilocco. Also, there are those who are knowledgable about these things and they are interested in trying to get the school on the National
Registrar for Endangered Historical Places. This is just a step, but one worth pursuing.

There is music and some narration on the tape. However, the music is low so that when you show your children and grandchildren and friends your old school campus you, yourself will be able to narrate, telling them about your own personal experiences while you were there.

My mother has worked very hard all of these years to put this wonderful book together and I appreciate that even more than any one could know, because I saw all the hard work she did and all the long hours of research that went into this. But what I appreciate most of all, is that even though she took on this time consuming project, she and my father have never stopped helping me and have always had the time for me and my daughter through all of the good and bad times in our life. Because of them I have my health, my beautiful daughter and a wonderful person at my side. I appreciate you mom and dad for everything. Thank you for this book and all the love I know went into it.

Donna you have done a beautiful job on your site, I have enjoyed it very much, I wanted to let you know that I have heard from Jackie Defoor, she has e-mailed me. Her mother, Evelyn Lochridge used to write me often and was also a Jones Researcher, I have many pictures of her line, and they will be in the "Joneses Revisited" book that hopefully will be out toward the end of 2001 which will be my 6th family publication and also my last.

I have read every page of your 'picture book' and found it totally absorbing - what a lot of time and effort has gone into it; it is a fascinating study; thank you for sharing it with us. I learnt about it through the 'postbag' of Cheshire Ancestor Journal.. I started my family research quite recently and have already found and met relatives in Atlanta as well as living relatives in Lancashire. This is a wonderful place. My grandfather, John Mabry, was a student at Chilocco in approx. 1895. My mother has always cherished a school picture she had of him in uniform. This has closed the link for both me and my mother.

My father Albert Wood and his sisters and one bother went to Cilocco. They were orphans. My father talked fondly for Chilocco. I belive Albert Wood graduated in early 1930's late 1920's. thank you for this site. Martin G Wood

Thank you for the website and it was great to read and see pictures of Chilocco. Some of those buildings have not changed much down thru the ages. I graduated in 1969, at that time, I think there were 1200 at Chilocco. Quite a few that we rate class AA. Which meant we were slaughter in football by those area teams which played together since grade school. Again Thanks.

Nice site. My mother and her brother and sisters (The Cheadle Family - Chickasaws) went to Chilocco in the 40's. Mike Gallegos (Director of Mid-America All Indian Center, Wichita, KS) told me about this site. The school now stands in disrepair. Sad. I remember it back in the '60's when Mother and step-father worked there.

I am a 1968 graduate of Chilocco and was taken with the pictures of Chilocco in the 1930's and 1946 - they were different from the Chiocco I remember and miss. Dr. Wall was superintendent when I was there and he was a quiet, but proud man. You know, I still dream of Chilocco 2-3 times a week and they are very vivid. I dream of home 3 & 5, the hub, the fountain and the bridge to the health center. I remember running around in the rain behind home 3 after a brief dry spell. I guess it is true - there are some things you can't forget, like your first love. Mine was at Chilocco. Oh, I waws Sonja Smith in my Chilocco days.

I came across your site today and find information on the Indian School very interesting. Both my parents (Navajo) attended Chilocco during the mid-1950s. Dad is Arnold Begay and mom is Alma Jones. We revisted chilocco in 98 when we drove down with the family to watch our son graduate from riverside indian school. It was sad to see the place in that condition after all these years. I am thankful for the experience of attending school there. Mrs. Larney taught me well in typing class. She was strict in class but I know now what she was trying to instill in me she was only preparing me. I have worked for IHS for 15 years. Hi, I have decided to sign your guest book. I was a student at Chilocco back in the school year 70/71. I was a freshman than. I had to transfer though because there was some sort of turmoil with students and the system. Anyway, my parents came after me and I had to transfer. I am from Tama, Iowa, Meskwaki Tribe. Henry Joseph Berry (Buttons) attended Chilocco about the year's 1964-1967 Got caought sneaking off the grounds for alcohol. Was put in the luggage storage room handcuffed to a cement post all night. Mr. Black shaved my head the next day and I had to perform at least 200 hours of cleaning to attend dances. I would likt to find a few peole that was there at the time to see how they are doing

I'm enrolled Yakama & 1/2 Assiniboine Sioux from the Yaka reservation in Toppenish, WA I graduated from Chilocco in Jan. 7 of 1967. Those days of carefree days are my best memories and I think its great to have this site for old graduates. Been searching the Collins family from Missouri. My husband is a Keith and we found out there are Collins (my paternal grandmother's side) and Byers (my paternal grandfather's side). I do know that I have a Cherokee heritage, several generations back. My great-grandparents, Collins, had many children; some of which were Bertha, Frank,Henry, Ella (my grandmother), Minnie, Henry, and Mabel. There may have been more but I don't remember. My grandmother, Ella Collins, married Harry Byers in the late 1800's and had two daughters: Helen (my mother) and Marie. My mother married William Matthew Edwards and had three children: William Carlton Edwards, Helen Doris, and Sharon Joyce Edwards (myself.) I was married and later divorced and am now happily married to Ervin Eugene Keith, Sr. Amaziningly, he and I resemble each other and the little girl Ina who died and there is a picture in this web site of her, looks a lot like me! My mother's family settled in Iron county and St. Francois County, Missouri. I cannot find a thing on our part of the family until my husband discovered this connection. Donna, I was thrilled to find your Chilocco web page. I served in in the 45th division, Co. C from Chilocco (1950-1952) Mr Mueller let me graduate with my class of 1951 by correspondence. I loved all your pictures, especially the stately acidemic building. I almost fell off it's roof while working with Martin Sanders to patch a leak. I know you will most likely reconize my sur name. This is a great site. It shares what many thought of Chilocco. I did not attend the school, but I am trying to locate a staff member from the early 1960's. His name is Mr Washington. I just read your article on Chilocco. I graduated from Chilocco in 1963 and was only there for a year and a half, my regret is that I did not go sooner. That 1 1/2 years at Chilocco was the best of times. I cherish the memories. I only wish there was some way we NA could preserve the school into maybe a retreat center or something useable for everyone. Thanks for a walk down memory lane. Donna, Thank you for the effort you took in creating this look into the past of Chilocco. I had many family members attend this school. My grandmother, Wynona Sams Walkingstick attended Chilocco 1934-1937. I visited the school in 1988. It was sad to see so much history laying in ruin. My mother, Viola Marree Howdeshell, attended the school starting in 1933. She has fond and not so fond memories. Her stories keep us laughing. I love to have her tell them. My Great-Uncle, Henry Ellis Nolatubby, was member of the class of 1939. He died during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a Marine stationed on the USS Arizona and is on record as the first Native American to die in WWII. I was so thrilled when I found this site and was able to print his yearbook picture!! Nancy, I just sent an e-mail to the "electricscotland" hoping you would get it..I am so excited, this is my grandmother. I was born in 1945 and never knew her. I have some pictures from my mother's albumns. Mom was 8yrs. old when Dewey passed away. I was on the net looking for her gravesite. She is buried in Granbury Texas. Thanks for an interesting history of Chiloco. I am a Flight Instructor from OSU and on a routine cross country flight happened to look down upon a stately, but deserted campus just south of Arkansas City, Ks. Descending lower, I could plainly read "Chiloco" on the water tower. I couldn't wait to get on line and find out more about this obscure piece of Midwestern history. Thanks to you, I did. Incidentally, the campus looks relatively modern but completely abandoned. Why wasnt't the facility sold or re-developed into some sort of profitable enterprise?

I was researching my genealogy and came across a 1907 postcard from Chilocco, sent by one of my distant cousins. Information on the school is scarce on the internet, so your web site is very much appreciated. Thanks for posting the archives & historical societies where the records are kept. I'm planning a spring trip to Oklahoma, and I will be looking into my family's records. I found this at the Carlisle Indian School site http://home.epix.net/~landis/secondary.html Lomawaima, K. Tsianina. THEY CALLED IT PRAIRIE LIGHT: THE STORY OF CHILOCCO INDIAN SCHOOL. Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1994. Lomawaima weaves the stories of Chilocco alumni into a tapestry of experience uniquely told out of the native voice. These stories bear resemblence to the Carlisle stories, carrying themes of resistance, affection and pride. Fortunately a nearby library has a copy, and I've ordered it. Again, thanks.

I just visited your website on Chilocco Indian School. I thought it was very nice. I am Cherokee Indian. My mother went to school at Chilocco. She had to drop out to take care of her mother. I found this extremely interesting. I looked for the school as I have come into possession of a letter which was addressed to a relative at the Chilocco School. It is dated 1898. Possibly my relative may have worked there in some capacity. It was a beautiful looking establishment. Plan to learn as much about the school as I can.

I can't thank you enough for this website resource. After a lifetime of wondering about my dad's heritage, he died yesterday and my mother 'released' some audio tapes that confirmed my broad suspicion that my dad has substantial North American Indian in his heritage. The 1st tape reveals that amongst other things, his mother attended Chilocco Indian School circa 1900.

My father was evasive and basically obnoxious about his heritage which raised my suspicion. For some reason, I guess his birth year (1921), or his father, this was shameful information to be buried forever. I have yet to ascertain tribe and further heritage but am anxious to find that out. I'm also relieved that he's no longer suffering and in a better place. I can't thank you enough for the phone #'s and addresses.

Dear Donna, It has been over a year since I wrote you last. A lot has happened I have moved back to Tennessee, where I feel at home, but most importantly my Mother passed away in October. AT her memorial I used a small passage of the story you wrote about her. I miss her dearly and wish every day that she was her for me to talk to. I am blessed to have had her as long as I did. She was just not happy living in this world without my dad. As I told you he died in November of 2001. Losing both your parents in less than a year is very hard. But with the Lords comfort I have been able to go on. Thank you so much for the Story you wrote about my mother. Nice website. I went to Chilocco from 1965 to 1968. Those years were the best years of my life. My name at that time was Paulette Meshquekennock (now Alexander) from the Dale, McLoud-Shawnee area. I would like to find the yearbooks from those years and hope to hear from other fellow students. Yep, I went to Chilocco from 1964-1969..I am a Colville Tribal member from Omak,WA. I was a cheerleader there from "B" to "A" squad. I have such happy, friendly,exciting times at school..Especially my first loves there :)..Now I have two sons and one grandchild, and I work for my tribe, graduated at University of Washington with my BA in Business. Really very interesting site. My father graduated from Chilocco prior to WWII. His name was Jack Alvin Journeycake. We ultimately ended-up in Miami Oklahoma. Thank you for putting your stories and pictures on the internet. It has been a wonderful afternoon sitting her and enjoying them. I am 1/4 Osage...my father is the son of Mildred BigEagle..daughter of Harry BigEagle. My grandmother passed when my dad was very young..but I do remember my Aunt Mamie...sister to Mildred. My father and his siblings attended Chilocco Indian School. The last name is McGilbra. His brother went on to become a teacher of photography at Chilocco. My dad told me some good times, but I think there were also some pretty rough times at Chilocco

I find it very nice to find this site. My grand parents attended and worked at this school. I remember living with my grandmother and playing around and in the fountain as a very small child. I went to a re-union with my great uncle(Overton "Buck" Cheadle) when I was younger and remembered the beauty of it. I will never forget the arch and the long drive with the trees crossing over the top. My grandparents are John C. Narcomey, Virginia Narcomey, Louis McGilbra and Julia Byrd (Cheedle)

I was born and raised in Arkansas City and had a friend whose parents taught at Chilocco(Hathcoat) I graduated in 1960 at Ark City, I had a newspaper route that went thru Chilocco during high school. I used to deliver it on my motorcycle. Some of my friends and i used to play basketball againest the students there. I am now retired from the Navy and have a trucking co. in Ark city. Visiting the site once again, last time I was here was in 2002. Wanted to see if I recognized any names. I wish I could have known about the reunion held in Toppenish, WA last year. If there is any more reunions coming up - please post the info. I attended Chilocco from 1971-1973, freshman and sophomore. My grandmother, Esther Davis, died last year. She was born in 1912. She was an orphan and was sent to chilocco inidan school by her aunts. She always said they were very good to her at the school. My grandfather attended Chilocco during his youth. It was always an area of extreme pride for him when it was mentioned. In fact, my Grandfather (Robert 'Bob' Gene Cramp) is slated to be entered into the school's hall of fame later this year. Unfortunatly, he passed away last weekend (3/28/2004) and wont be able to accept his honor in person. Thanks for the work on this site. Hi Donna...it is Victoria Dunlap, Chuck's wife here in Washington State....Long time....how are you doing? Chuck has written a few more songs and will send them to you when he can. He is currently working in Medford, Oregon...but will be home for the summer.I wanted to tell you about a film that will be playing at a Film Festival in Oklahoma. The film is called " Legacy of the Mountain Meadow Massacre" by Brian Patrick a history professor at the University of Utah. This is the true story about the wagon train from Arkansas to California that came to an ill fate in Utah. Over a hundred men, woman and children where massacred by the Mormons in the early 1800's. Half where Dunlap's.....Your great aunt, Charity Parilee Collins married a Dunlap as you know. This is a story about that side of the family. I will attach Brian Patrick's email which gives the when and where of the film. He wanted as many descendants there as possible. I told Maclain and Ethel Dunlap, and they will try to make it. I am a Waganakising Odawa of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. My english name is Warren Petoskey and presently I am the Elder's Outreach Coordinator for the tribe. I have done a lot of research since discovering that my grandfather attended Carlisle Indian School and my father attended Mt. Pleasant Boarding School. I'm enrolled Warm Springs, from Oregon but was there with all the Yakima's since I was raised here. I was always with Rhona and Janice Peters. Anyway, wondering about these classmates: Goldie Grass, Melvin Johnson, Lee Bitsuie or Bitsue and Mayann Luna. Had girl friends from Florida also. I would like to hear from anyone. I always enjoy reading the things you write. You mentioned a video of Chilocco. Is that the one you sent me a copy of? Also, sometimes I think back when Helen and I would get on the bus and ride off from our home and our parents to attend Chilocco, knowing we could not come home for months. It sometimes tugs on my heartstrings with sadness when I think about leaving my parents at the age of 14 even tho I knew then it was a good thing to do and I still know now it was a good thing going to Chilocco. It helped me and it helped my parents financially.

I think as I get older, I get more sentimental. I probably would not have changed anything but I sometimes get a little sad thinking of missing my parents. Ruby
