Daughter to Bellzona and
Joseph Hubbart Jones
This girlish picture of
Gertrude was taken around and about the age of fourteen which would have
been about 1904. Gertrude's father, Joseph Hubbart Jones worked for the
post office in Grandberry, Texas. The family migrated from there up
through the Red River Valley then on to around Guthrie Oklahoma at the
time of the land run. They then settled in and around Guymond, Oklahoma
which is close to the Panhandle. Bellzona was industrious and all the
pictures show the children well dressed. Gertrude learned these things
from her mother since her children always looked well groomed with her own
sewing ability. Bell did teach the young girls to use a needle at the
earliest age, starting with hand hemming tea towels. Crochet would be
taught by using the string from gift wrappings. The resulting shiny doily
was a pleasure for the child.
Gertrude married early and
when her family moved "back to the Osages," the young woman
stayed with her husband separated by too many miles to allow them to have
close association. Their strong culture, however; kept their closeness and
they did correspond, exchanging pictures and events through the mail.
From these roots have come
a great contribution to society since her children and the grandchildren
have varied gifts. Some are teachers, some are ministers, registered
nurses and so on. |
