The Joneses -
Ruth Ann Jones

Ruth Ann Jones

The Joneses:   Ruth Ann Jones, Sister to Joseph Hubbard Jones, daughter of William Stephens and Mary Ann Witt Jones

Date:  February 26, 2003
A cousin, Dian Layman from Arkansas recently shared this information on Ruth Ann Jones. Dian is a descendant of Walsie Jones, Mrs. Pierce Watkins.  Walsie was a sister to my grandfather, Joseph Hubbard Jones and Ruth Ann.

At this time let there be a note made,  Ruth Ann Jones is listed
with the genealogy programs as a daughter of Stephen Williams and Mary Ann Warner. This is an error and I suppose it cannot be changed. I have records from the Tennessee Bridal Records showing William Stephens Jones, Mary Ann,  mother of Ruth Ann with a correct birthday of December 17, listing her as Mary Ann WITT. She had a son,  DeWitt, whose nickname was Dee or Little Dee. He was a jockey.  Their federal census records show William Stephens also, instead of Stephen William.  This is accurate; therefore, I am listing grandfather's name in this way instead of as it was on the records sent to me. The record of Warner instead of Witt was probably honestly misread from hand-written papers found in Walsie's, William Stephens Joneses daughter,  belongings.

Ruth Ann Jones was born in 1866. She owned a hotel in Burbank, Oklahoma. An aged resident of the town pointed out the location of the hotel. It was on main street across from what was a bank. The building of cut, natural stone, is mostly just rubble with only part of it standing.

Today in the year 2000 even the rubble has been cleared. Ruth was married three times.  Family tells that the men's sir names Ruth Ann married were: Murray, Cushman and Hendrix. She lived in Siloam Springs and a death notice is on record in an old newspaper from there showing her last name as Hendrix.

The time she owned the hotel was at the peak of the Osage oil boom and there, without doubt,  could be much history gleaned, if there are any of her descendants left who knew of her.

I will add the pages of her history sent to me by Dian Layman. This is accurate.  I began working on this after 1986 when my father, Lee Otis Jones, died. Today's date: April 02, 2005

The town, Burbank, Oklahoma, has a small population. The location is unique in that it rests atop a sharp incline of a hill. There is a remaining three story school building at the highest point of the town. In order to get to the school one has to drive up a steep road to it. Down below the school is the residential section and what was once the main part of town where the banks, grocery store, filling station and hotels were located. The town was established  during the rough and tumble oil field days. This tells you something about the resolve the Joneses had for succeeding. The way Ruth is grimacing in this photograph looks like she needs glasses. I would be safe in saying it probably has more to do with her being iron jawed and stressed out. The will of the Welsh was their way of living. Somehow they were able to inculcate into their children that kind of determination for positive endeavors while adhering to strict self-control.

BROTHERS DIE IN CRASH OF LIGHT PLANE
Flying H. Ranch Owners Victims of Air Accident
A.C. Hendricks, 68, and George Hendricks, 70, brothers and prominent
rancers of the southwesst, lost their lives yesterday afternoon when the
Taylor-craft airplane in which they were riding crashed near their
Flying H. ranch, 65 miles south west of Roswell at 4:24.
Mrs. Fred Teel, school bus driver, who witnessed the accident with
Mrs. Lily Norton, of the Flying H, and the pupils of the Flying H.
school reported she first saw the plane flying at a low altitude down
Loco canyon near the school. Twice before the light craft nosed to the
ground, she said, it suddenly turned up as if trying to gain altitude,
then it swooped and a portion of the nose appeared to fall away.
Arriving at the scene of the crash, about a quarter mile from the
highway, the two women found A.C. Hendricks still alive but said
apparently George Hendricks had been killed instantly. Unable to remove
A. C. Hendricks from the plane, the women drove to the headquarter of
the Flying H four miles distant.
Fred Teel and another man returned to the scene with the two women.
They found Mr. Hendricks still alive, but he died a few minutes later.
The bodies of both men were badly mangled.
A.C. Hendricks was born at Tarrant County, Texas October 5, 1872 and
purchased the Flying H in 1929 from S.S. Ward. He also owns ranches near
Carrisoso and Capitan.
An aviation enthusiast for a number of years A.C. Hendricks learned
to fly in 1942, but had not done regular flying until during the lst
year.  He was the owner of three planes beside the one in the accident,
he owned a twin-engine plane and an Aero-coup.
Survivors of A.C. Hendricks are his widow and a son, Clement
Hendricks of the Flying H. and a daughter, Mrs. Bryce Dugger of
Carrisoso. another son, Algin, died about a year ago.
George Hendricks is survived by his widow and four sons, Eugene,
Bert, Dee, and Dan, all of parts unknown.
Othere survivors of the two men are two brother, E.H. Hendricks, of
Capitan, and Ricks Y. Hendricks, of the Flying H. and five sisters, Mrs.
Mort Smith, Lubbock, Mrs. Sadie Finley, and James Oxford, both of the
Flying H; Mrs. A.M. Blalock, Christine County, Texas; and Mrs. John
Jones, Erick, Oklahoma
District Attorney G.T. Watts announced that an inquest will be held
but that no date has been set.
The double funeral service will be held at the Ballard funeral
chapel Saturday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. A.A. Dulaney, pastor of the
First Baptist church officiating
Bearers will be Onis Reynolds, Dick Callens, Fred Teel, W.C. Teel,
