Nancy Bellzona's Picture Book
The Osages - Chief Fred Lookout

Chief Fred Lookout, (right)Chief Fred Lookout, (right) middle person, possibly, Mrs. Frank Phillips, wife of the oilman, Julia Mongrain, (left), wife of Fred Lookout.

Chief Fred Lookout was the last chief of the Osages who inherited the title by blood. Many stories are still told today of how he was a wise and benevolent chief. He cared for his people in great and small ways, even down to seeing to it children had clothing for school when there was a need. The Osage government is a humane and outstanding system which allows an equal sharing of their wealth as to royalties paid out to the people.

In the Osage site on the biography link to Fred Lookout my younger brother "Fred Lookout was Eagle Clan of the Hunka Division.  The Redeagle family is Eagle but of the Tsi-zho Division. These are different eagles. As to our father's Osage name, Shinga Kihekah does not mean "Little Chief" that is "Kihekah Shinga".  "Shinga Kihekah" is a Bear Clan name, of which to that Clan, I am the authorized namer.  "Shinga Kihekah" is a medicine name and may be best translated as "The Child Chief".  The other aspects of that name are the "Radiant Star" and two other names, but now I am getting to far into it.

Geoffrey M. Standing Bear
Pawhuska, Oklahoma

The date of February 24, 2004 the above correction was made from the account given by Geoffrey M. Standing Bear. This date today is over eighteen years after the beginning of this work. How slowly time has a way of opening up new information. Deepest appreciation to Mr. Standing Bear for sharing and being alert to an accurate saving of information.

Fred Lookout was twelve years old when he went on the last buffalo hunt with the tribe.

Julia Mongrain Lookout, wife of Fred Lookout, was the daughter of Stephen Mongrain and Mary Pryor. She was the older sister to Rosa Pryor, wife of Henry Red Eagle. Julia Mongrain Lookout (Wife of Fred) was not the sister to Rosa Pryor, but the niece, as Rosa Pryor, later Rosa Red Eagle, was the sister to Mary Pryor who was Julia’s mother. Henry was father to Paul Red Eagle. Children of Fred and Julia Lookout were: 1. Charles 2. Frederick 3. Mary 4. Nora 5. Henry. There is an Agnes listed in the Osage Roll book, who died as an infant. She is listed with this family.

Mary Nora Lookout, Osage name: "One Eagle," married Eugene George Standing Bear, who is Ogalala Sioux. Mary Nora and Eugene George had one son, George Eugene Standing Bear, Osage name, "Little Chief."

George (Child Chief) was married to Barbara Jean Wright, who is a nurse. Their children are: 1. Geoffrey Mongrain, 2. Eugene Sean, 3. Patrick Spencer and 4. Margaret Mary Rebecca (Meg) Standing Bear. Barbara Jean Wright is remarried to Dr. Hoge of Ketchum, Oklahoma, where she works with him as his nurse.

The above information was shared by Eugene Sean Standing Bear, grandson of Chief Fred Lookout. His Osage name is Le-Don-xe, translated, "Grey Hawk or Grey Eagle." His spouse is: Patricia Jo StandingBear.

Julia and Fred Lookout are buried on Lookout Hill east of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, three miles on twenty first street. The graves are set at the very top of the hill and are marked with a granite marker the same color as the Oklahoma capital building. It is a historical site and is marked as such with a marker on Lynn street, giving directions to the site. A United States Flag also marks the graves.

This snapshot almost was pushed back and not used since it is only a snapshot and not of good pictorial quality. The questions are: Who took the picture? Why did Bellzona, tuck it neatly into her little tin box? How was Bellzona's grandmother, Mary America Hunter Brewer associated?

Mary America Hunter and John W. Brewer, were mother and father of Elizabeth Ann Brewer Collins.

John Brewer was the son of Jacob & Eda Brewer. John had a brother, Jacob Fletcher. Fletcher was a French name, meaning "flesh," translated to arrow in Osage, which is a vague reference to Fred Lookout's name, or one who doesn't miss his target.

Words on marker at LookOut Hill: Julia Mogre LookOut, Mos-Se-Chee-He. Born 1-1-1870. Died 2-28-1950. Great-Granddaughter of Chief Pa-Hiu-Ska (White Hair). A true help mate and devoted mother.

Chief Fred LookOut, Wa-No-She-Zhi-Ga, Little Soldier. Born 11-17-1861. Died 8-28-1949. The hereditary Chief of the Great and Little Osage served two tribes with wisdom, integrity and faithfulness.
