They
must all indicate happiness. The bear relatives must be extremely pleasant
to the visiting Eagle, and the Eagle must act as courteously as guests are
supposed to act. The Bear relatives must donate food for the feasts, and
the Eagle relatives must make their donations as well. This must be so if
they wanted the marriage to be a success. Quarreling, frowning, acting
surly would not be propitious, and the young people might start out under
a cloud.
The above taken from John Joseph Matthew's,
"The Osages."
This blanket is properly worn with one arm

The following information was tediously and
lovingly compiled by Esther Inez Jones Epperson, younger daughter of Lee

please understand these are necessary to cross check for accuracy.
The Mathews name is well-respected today
with the Osage people. John Joseph Matthew's recording of their histories
is a valuable tool in understanding the ancient culture. With this
knowledge one can understand why Lee Otis Jones held so tenaciously to
these pictures, throughout his life. He saw the value of a recorded
pictorial history in them. |
