It Ain’t Me,
September 8, 2006
Have you ever had someone
end a love story with the words, “It’s me, darlin’ Ah just cain’t help it,
it’s just me?” The woman who looks more like a girl is speaking to the
audience as we walk in on her performance.
“This beautiful little singer surely didn’t have someone tromp on her
heart in such a way,” I am thinking.
“Yeah, it’s you, Honey, ‘cause it shore ain’t me,” she went on to say
before she started the song she had written, “It Ain’t me.”
Piper Leigh sang her heart out tonight while we munched on our salads
and pizza at the Town Site Café. Friends we had not seen in 5, 10, and even
15 years were all around us and it was a bit like a family reunion. It was
a nostalgic moment as we discussed the sad times and the happy times we all
enjoyed over the years. An old friend talked about her daughter she lost
over thirteen years ago and the girl was all at once standing there beside
her mother in my mind. I could see the frail wisp of a child who had
suffered with seizures that could never be controlled. Her mother and I
were again connected in a deep understanding of the heartbreak of it.
Another friend I had not
seen for around five years was there with her grown family and we all
introduced each other while Piper sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow in the
background. We all had to stop our conversation for a pause long enough to
hear the throaty execution of the hard to copy melody. It was almost as if
it was spoken to a memory of dusty cobwebs in our mind.
How such an evening could
take fifteen years off my mind and body I cannot explain but it did and for
that, thank you, Piper Leigh. Your wonderful dedication, talent and love
through your music lifted us.
