Farmal
Farmal Tractor

Dad's pick for a tractor was a Farmal. In this picture there is a wheel on the left without showing the tractor. These were the wheels of Dad's tractor. The old tractor did not have rubber tires but, instead, had lugs like this wheel.  The sharp pointed lugs were what was needed for the gumbo soil at the ranch. There was no sticking these tractors up in the mud.

Case baler
Case baler

Junior Hurlburt has now restored a 1942 Case baler that requires 2 people to sit on the back and tie bales.

This was the kind of baler we used at the ranch. My Dad and  I would sit and tie.  Mother drove the tractor to pull the baler while she held my brother Mike. He was two and I was four.  For anyone who charged that oil money supported the ranch let them read this.

One would punch them through the hay and the one on the other side would slip a piece of baling wire through the hoop for the tie.  Sometimes, I at four years old did not catch all the hoops. They would go by too fast. Dad was continually encouraging me, "Don't worry about it."  "Let them go on."
