The most favorite place for
me in the house was this window bench. Here is where I would line my dolls
up all in a row. They each took their turn allowing me to change and dress
them as I pleased.
No drapes or fabric was
ever hung over these windows. They were allowed to stay uncovered. After
all, who was there to look into the house at night.
Bell and the family kept
"knick knacks" at a minimum. There were souvenirs and they were stored in
the cabinets which acted as a divider between the living and dining room.
The cabinets had glass doors on them and the things inside could be seen
through them.
Bell's asthma kept her
dusting and making regular cleaning as easy as possible. This is the one
chore which fell to me. I did not like dusting the carved places in the
dining room furniture. Anything that was of a nature to catch dust just
was not used. Bell exercised a tight fisted control on this part of their
lives.
My sister made the
comment, "How can you take these pictures knowing how beautiful this once
was?" Upon thinking about her question I replied, "I guess someone has to
be the family historian."
