Taking a wall out between a small bedroom and
the living room allowed me to double my living room space. Mother enjoys
sleeping here when she stays over because she can enjoy watching the
larger television from her bed. For all her life it seems she was sleeping
in short naps during the day because she worked night shifts at the cafe
as a cook. She was always comfortable where the goings on of the
household were. Her Native American blood must have made her a light
sleeper because the least little commotion would find her awake and alert.
Mother, in this way, trained us because we were always careful not to
let anything irregular disturb her rest. Today at 93 her working days are
long gone but she still enjoys being able to be at the certer of all
activity in the house and this day bed allows that for her.
The fabric for the spread, the drapes and cushions are what I bought at a
fire sale for less than a dollar a yard. I bought a whole bolt for
probably around 30 dollars and all the north windows are where it is
hanging. The material is heavy and flannel like. It isn't very rich or
doesn't have an attractive pattern but the color and the amount of it used
makes it serve the purpose. Because I have so much yardage the north
windows have it doubled so it is lined with itself making it a very nice
insulator for those cold spaces. I took enough of the fabric over to a
friend who does quilting on a large machine and she made this spread so it
is reversible. This also makes a nice cover for Mother because it is very
warm with the puffy lining it has. The flannel feel of the fabric is
nice.
You can see the small heater we used in this living room. After Rodney
insulated these walls with a double 2x4, insulation and wall board the
north wall is incredibly warm, enough so that when someone places their
hand on it there is no cold feel to the wall.
When I can afford it I will get one of those large room divider walls to
pull across this should we need to use the room for guests. At this time
the curtains can simply be pulled across if there is a need for privacy.
