Donna earns her money as an artist and I asked her how she went about
creating her paintings and this is what she said...
"I ask for a photograph the individual likes with the understanding the photo is not to copy but rather a way I can see the colors they want and the subject matter they like, whether it be still-life, landscape, animal, or whatever. I explain the painting will be my own creation and original. Some artists are put off with painting for an individual for use to decorate their house. This does not bother me since I have done this for years. Whatever colors are in their living room, whatever style or decor we can match, be it Ranch western, Gondolas, Spanish, Scot, Native American whatever. With a picture, I can go from there."
"I only do 11 x 14 inch size. This is because this size can be used easily for reproduction just in case they want to make cards, prints for gifts, put it on a T-shirt, coffee cups, whatever. For folks who are serious about making money with art, this is the way they advertise the painting they own, thus increasing its value compared to the familiarity we have with Van Gogh's sunflowers, etc."
"I paint on masonite. Many museums here in the US prefer the more durable material, especially for Native American work. Paper for watercolor is okay but after all, does deteriorate."
"Standard price for everything is in dollars, 1500. It balances out. Some work goes so easily, taking less time, others fight me every step of the way. Also this covers, the mailing and insurance."
I asked Donna if she could demonstrate
how she takes a picture and then makes a painting from it and here is an
actual example...
