Kenneth Devere Attocknie


FORT COBB - Funeral for Kenneth Devere Attocknie, 55, Fort Cobb, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Comanche Nation Funeral Home, Lawton. The family will receive guests at 2 p.m. at Caddo Indian Baptist Church, Fort Cobb.

Mr. Attocknie died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007.

Inurnment will be at Cache Creek KCA Cemetery, Apache, and Fort Cobb Cemetery, Fort Cobb.

He was born on May 27, 1952, in Lawton, to Kay Attocknie and Justina Joyce Guy. He was a registered member of the Comanche Tribe of Oklahoma was also an involved member of the Caddo Tribe of Oklahoma. He was a direct descendent of Albert Attocknie "Lone Tipi," the Comanche chief Ten Bears and the last sub-chief of the Caddo Tribe, Harry Inkinish "Duscut."

Most of his childhood was spent in Valdosta, Ga., where he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. After graduating from high school at Chilocco Indian School in northern Oklahoma, he was accepted to Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. He and his family moved back to Fort Cobb, and he later received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha. After receiving a Master of Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University's School of Education in Cambridge, Mass., he settled in the New England area, where he worked for non-profit organizations serving native people. He served as executive director of American Indians for Development in Meriden, Conn. and was also a vocational social service coordinator at the North American Indian Center of Boston in Jamaica Plain, Mass. He was an involved singer and attended many powwows and Sun Dance ceremonies.

Survivors include two sons: Kenneth Kay Attocknie, Houston; and Michael Dustin Attocknie, Waipahu, Hawaii; three sisters: Kay Attocknie, Oklahoma; Kristina Kelly Roberson, Blackshear, Ga.; and Kelly-Renee Kelly Stubbs, Valdosta, Ga.; and a granddaughter, Malia'ahonui Sawmee Attocknie, Waipahu, Hawaii.

Flowers may be delivered to Comanche Nation Funeral Home, 2701 SW "J" Avenue, Lawton.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

The family requests anyone attending the service to bring pictures of Ken to share if you have them. Condolences may be sent online to loneteepee@hotmail.com
