Chilocco - Today and Yesterday

Chilocco's Carriasco McGilbra

This girl has given me permission to add her short note to this page.

I used to visit Chilocco when we would drive down to Oklahoma for summer vacations.  I live in Ohio. My grandparents lived and died in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma.  My dad (Jerry McGilbra) died April 19th, 1995. He wanted to be buried in Oklahoma, so we had his body buried in the Tuskahoma Cementary.  My brother plans a trip there this summer to see the grave sites.

Do you remember my dad?  I have an old Chilocco Indian School yearbook I inherited from him.  He was a very handsome guy.Aunt Grace died years ago.  She was one of the nicest people I have ever met.  Aunt Grace had a kind spirit.  I miss her very much. Dad used to tell the story of Chilocco at night.  He said he would sneak out and run to the watermelon patches around the campus.  He said one night after eating all the watermelon he could, on his way back to his dorm he could of sworn he seen "the Mummy" roaming in the night.  Dad said he never ran so fast has he did that night.  I think he enjoyed Chilocco.  He used to tell many stories of his younger days at school. I also have an Aunt Shirley.  Do you remember her?  Our family is Creek Indian.

One of these days I would like to go back to Oklahoma and visit Chilocco and Tuskahoma.

Once again, thank you for your e-mail.

As a matter of fact I do not remember her father. I did remember her uncle quite well. Carriasco McGilbra was an employee when I worked there in 1956.  Carriasco was a gifted photographer. I believe in worked in boy's guidance which caused him to have to drop into the office at the health clinic often for records. Of course, off times at the clinic there was no traffic. This was off balanced with times when we had flu epidemics, typhoid shots, or other rushes of students coming through. When it was quiet one had to look for work. At this time Carriasco had time to visit as I collected his files. I learned he had been injured at the school in a basketball game.

He later married Grace, a woman  with whom I had attended classes at the college in Arkansas City. If you scroll all the way down to this page you can see Carriasco's photography of graduating students. Quite a difference from the earlier annual pictures.
