Dunan - the ancient fort over Dunoon, Argyll
Known as the 'Camel's Hump' to all locals, the
brooding hill overlooking the coastal town of Dunoon in Argyll has a
long and storied past. Dunan, or 'the small fort', was an outpost of the
larger Dunoon Castle until they both fell into disuse and abandonment in
the 17th century. There are clues however that the fortification of
Dunan goes much farther back...
This video explores the evidence that Dunan was occupied in the ancient
past. It visits the site and provides analysis and discussion of the
evidence for early settlement and fortification on the shores of the
Clyde.
When researching this content I discovered that Pipe Major John McLellan
(1875-1949), a native of Dunoon, composed music inspired by Dunloskin at
the foot of Dunan. I've incorporated this into the video, using the
excellent rendition by Brandon Vance. If you enjoy it, please check out

The majority of this content was recorded during a site visit in
November 2022. Apologies for the wind noise at times - I just used my
phone on the day to record the footage. Also - once uploaded to YouTube
I realise the intro music overlaps the narration for the opening few
seconds - not great editing on my part, sorry!
